Should you stain or seal your Richmond VA deck? Here is the difference between stains and sealers and which is right for your deck's needs.
Every pressure-treated wood or natural wood deck in Richmond needs protection from the elements. The choice between deck stain and deck sealer significantly affects how well the deck is protected, how long the treatment lasts, and how it looks.
Deck stains contain pigments that add color while penetrating into the wood to provide UV protection and moisture resistance. Semi-transparent stains allow the wood grain to show while adding tonal color. Solid color stains provide full coverage similar to paint. In Virginia's UV-intense summers, stains offer better long-term protection than clear sealers because the pigment reflects UV radiation.
Clear sealers provide waterproofing without color. They are ideal for new pressure-treated wood that you want to maintain in its natural appearance, or for ipe and other tropical hardwoods where the natural color is part of the aesthetic. The downside: clear sealers provide minimal UV protection, and wood sealed with a clear product grays faster under direct sun.
For most Richmond PT wood decks, a semi-transparent stain in a natural brown or cedar tone is the best choice. It enhances the wood's appearance, provides UV protection, and moisture resistance, and lasts 2–3 years in Virginia's climate before needing reapplication.
PA Painting provides deck staining and sealing services throughout Richmond and surrounding counties. We pressure wash the deck, allow it to dry fully (48–72 hours minimum), and apply two coats of premium Defy or Armstrong Clark deck stain. A properly stained deck looks beautiful immediately and holds up significantly longer than untreated wood in Virginia's climate.
