5 Signs Your Home Exterior Needs New Paint in Richmond VA

Knowing when to repaint saves you from expensive wood rot and moisture damage. Here are the 5 signs Richmond homeowners should watch for.

Most Richmond homeowners wait too long to repaint their home's exterior — and by the time they notice the problem, the paint is failing and wood damage has begun. Catching these five warning signs early saves money and protects your home's structure.

Peeling or flaking paint is the most obvious sign. When paint loses adhesion and separates from the surface, water can penetrate immediately. Even small areas of peeling paint on wood siding should be addressed quickly — water infiltration leads to rot, and rot repairs are far more expensive than a paint job.

Chalking is less obvious but equally important. Run your hand across an exterior painted surface. If white powder comes off on your palm, the paint binders have broken down due to UV exposure. Chalky paint no longer protects the surface underneath and needs to be removed before repainting.

Fading is cosmetic but also a sign of paint degradation. If your home's color looks noticeably different from north-facing walls (less sun) to south-facing walls (more sun), the paint is failing unevenly and likely needs attention on the high-exposure sides.

Cracking or checking refers to hairline cracks that develop as paint loses flexibility with age. Left untreated, these cracks allow water in during every rain. Check your trim boards and window casings especially — these areas experience the most movement and crack first.

Moisture stains on interior walls near windows or at the base of exterior walls often signal that exterior paint failure is allowing water to penetrate your home's envelope. If you see water stains inside without a plumbing explanation, inspect the exterior paint immediately.
